Of the Lilies

The lilies never fail to fill my heart with pain.
But when the pain has passed, my gladness comes again.
First pain—for long ago
In Paradise I dressed
Like one of them, but lost
The glory that I wore—
Then joy, for Jesus Christ has come in human flesh
And robes me now afresh like them forever more.

Von den Lilgen.
So offt ich Lilgen seh / so offt empfind’ ich Pein /
Und muß auch bald zugleich so offt voll Freuden seyn.
Die Pein enstehet mir / weil ich die Ziehr verlohrn /
Die ich im Paradiß von anbegin gehabt.
Die Frewde kombt daher / weil Jesus ist gebohrn
Der mich nu widerumb mit jhr aufs neu begabt.
